About South West Bethel Synod – EECMY

Following the fall of the Derg regime, the proclamation of the Gospel rapidly expanded across various regions including Bench-Maji (Sheko), Kaffa, Sheka, and neighboring areas. Alongside spiritual growth, the Synod began to engage more actively in social and developmental ministries, increasing both in scope and impact.

Recognizing the need for strong leadership and organizational structure to effectively manage these expanding ministries, church leaders initiated the formation of a Synod. After careful evaluation of the presbytery’s readiness—based on its spiritual maturity, administrative capacity, and growing membership—the General Assembly of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY) officially established the South West Bethel Synod in Tir 1989 E.C. (January 1997 G.C.) during its 15th General Assembly.

At its inception, the Synod brought together 12 presbyteries serving more than 2,000 believers across the region. In Miyazya 1989 E.C. (April 1997 G.C.), the Synod held its first official assembly, during which:

  • Mr. Petros Tsanune Yashu was elected as President,
  • Mr. Tegeny Woyisia as Vice President,
  • and three additional administrative officers were appointed.

According to the Synod’s by-laws, leadership elections are conducted every four years. Over the years, many faithful leaders have served in various capacities. Currently, Rev. Tateke Kifle serves as President of the Synod, leading alongside other elected members to advance both spiritual and social transformation throughout the region.

Now, The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus South West Bethel Synod (EECMY SWBS) serves as a key spiritual and administrative entity. Headquartered in Mizan Teferi, the Synod operates throughout the Bench Sheko, Kaffa, Sheka, and West Omo zones, reaching diverse populations with the message of salvation and the values of compassion, justice, and integrity.

Through its various church-based and community-oriented programs, the South West Bethel Synod continues to strengthen faith, empower local congregations, and contribute meaningfully to spiritual, social, and economic development in the region.
